Piura Project – Beneficiary communities

The selected communities for the project belong to the districts of La Arena and La Union: San Martín de Létira, Miguel Seminario and Los Almendros.

The communities were selected due to their particular geographic isolation in the area as well as the fact that they face a several lack of basic services, such as: non-existent essential infrastructures such as roads, sanitation systems, educational infrastructures and health services. All of this has led to large numbers of the population becoming extremely vulnerable.

This project will directly benefit approximately 1300 people and its implementation will improve, not only the living conditions in their communities, but it will also create a sense of resilience and organizational capacity that will promote their future development possibilities.

1. San Martín de Létira

San Martín de Létira lacks a public space for the community to meet and make collective community decisions. The main objective of the project is the construction of a community center that serves as a meeting point for social activities. A community space such as this would increase and promote community participation in the processes involved that seek to improve their living conditions.

Likewise, it could be used to prepare the “Vaso de leche” and “Comedor Popular”, these are the food aid that the state provides to the most vulnerable communities in the country.

Main objective

Creation of a space to promote and conduct activities of associative nature and of common interest in the community.

Specific objectives

  • Building a space for social exchange between the people of the community;
  • Providing adequate conditions for carrying out activities and community meetings;
  • Providing equipment and furniture to carry out community activities of social nature;
  • Carrying out an inclusive and participatory community development project that can motivate the participation in social and community activities of the beneficiaries;
  • Strengthening the regional and local capacity in the community to manage the project in a sustainable way;
  • Achieving a great social impact generating a sense of self-sufficiency, self-help and selfmanagement in the beneficiary community.

2. Miguel Seminario

In this community, two main lines of intervention concur: firstly, there is a need to improve the sanitation conditions through the construction of dry ecological toilets. Secondly, the need to have a community and recreational space in the open air has been identified, a place for meeting and the promotion of community participation.

The second course of action is not only reflected in a physical aspect, but above all in the use and activation that can be made by the inhabitants of the community in the main square. The goal is to transform an “empty” place into a place for community meetings and gatherings, where children of the neighborhood can safely play, improving the quality of life for all members.

This project is the first step in addressing the short-term needs of the community based on the reconfiguration of the conditions of hygiene, health, recreation and community deployment, it also lays the foundations for envisioned long-term support.

In addition, teachers themselves will be made aware of good hygiene practices and they will be provided with new furniture and teaching materials.
